We welcome you aboard to a day of cultural discovery and geothermal wonderland exploration…
As we depart the Port of Tauranga bound for the Rotorua region, we will take you around Mount Maunganui inner harbour, enjoy the views of the glorious white sand surf beach which stretches as far as the eye can see. Our journey today will be approx a 1hr drive so sit back and enjoy.
The Bay of Plenty region is well known for its significant horticultural, forestry and tourism industries. We will be passing through a lot of farming land as we continue. On route we pass avocado and kiwifruit orchards and pine forests. We then pass Lakes Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua, 2 of the 16 lakes in the region, we continue our journey to Rotorua.
Upon arrival to Rotorua, we spend the day at The Living Maori Village, Whakarewarewa.
Whakarewarewa is the legacy and home of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people, who have been sharing their unique way of life with visitors from all around the world for over two hundred years.
Explore an authentic living Māori village where people live on a daily basis, using natural geothermal resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes as they have for centuries.
View the geothermal wonders of Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley including the world-famous Pōhutu geyser, boiling mud-pools, steam vents and bubbling pools. Learn what it’s like to live in the challenging geothermal plateau where daily life includes cooking in the bubbling pools and steam vents, and bathing in the refreshing therapeutic waters. Take in all the various historical landmarks and buildings, including an active Marae (meeting grounds and focal point of Maori communities), the WWII Memorial Archway, historic churches, and tapu (sacred) burial grounds. Whakarewarewa is truly NZ’s iconic Living Maori Village experience.
The Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people have a proud history of sharing their stories through song and dance spanning over a century. Relax in the performance area as you immerse yourself on an historic journey using song & dance, stick games, hand, eye & body movements to tell their stories, myths & legends.
On our journey back to your ship, you can sit back and enjoy the memories you made today while you were exploring “our backyard”.
We will have you back at your ship at the Port of Tauranga well prior to your sailing time.
