As we depart Tauranga, our journey through to Waiotapu will take approx 1.5 hrs, so sit back and enjoy the ride, snacks and soft drinks (all inclusive) as you take in the beautiful Aotearoa scenery.
On route we will be passing through a lot of farming land, avocado and kiwifruit orchards and pine forests. As we get nearer to Rotorua, we pass Lakes Rotoiti and Lake Rotorua, 2 of the 16 lakes in the region.
Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland, is named as "One of the 20 Most Surreal Places in the World" Thousands of years in the making and unique geothermal elements sculpted by thousands of years of geothermal activity. Waiotapu (Māori for "sacred waters").
Prior to European occupation the area was the homeland of the Ngāti Whaoa tribe who descended from those on the Arawa waka (canoe).
Unique features include the world famous Champagne Pool naturally coloured springs, bubbling mud, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations. The natural bush setting adds another dimension to the experience as does the Lady Knox Geyser which erupts daily at 10.15 am to heights of up to 20 meters.
The Visitor Centre has a wide range of New Zealand souvenirs and a cafe where you can purchase food, drinks etc.
On our leisurely scenic drive back to your ship, you will have time to peruse the many photos from your day full of glorious colour.
We will have you back at your ship at the Port of Tauranga well prior to your sailing time.
